How much horsepower does a E36 M3 have stock?
Thanks,
Frank
i think its 240.
Thanks!
Frank
depends... if its a 95 with a 3.0L OBD-I Engine it has 240hp (like mine) .. but if its a 96-99 with a 3.2L OBD-II then i beleive it has 280hp stock! 3:

95's are rated at 240 BHP
96-99 are rated at 240 BHP
Both are the same, yet the 3.2L's put out a little bit more torque due to its bigger stroke

The european M3 3.0 has 286HP/236TQ, while the GT has 295HP/238TQ. The M3 3.2 has 321HP/258TQ; there was no special stock edition of this model. Fast cars.
96-99 stock has 240, redlines at 6500

Don't quote me but i'm pretty sure
If that makes you feel better . . .
They all have 240 HP in U.S. Spec.
All have 240, but many people have said that the 3.2Ls have more HP then what's advertised.
i've dynoed tons of e36 m3s, in stock and modded form. i've seen them make anywhere from 195 to 220 in bone stock trim on my dynapack, so it's just the luck of the draw i guess.
Wow. It surprises me to hear so many people who are under false assumptions with regard to the hp ratings of these engines.
My thoughts exactly.:Wow. It surprises me to hear so many people who are under false assumptions with regard to the hp ratings of these engines.
Thanks everyone!! This was very helpful!!

I'm still of the opinion that the 3.2L motor puts out a bit more HP than the 3.0L motor, but BMWNA didn't want to piss off '95 owners by rating it higher. So they just rated them the same.
NoThey are all the same. Even the torque is the same.
???
I would be really pissed if my 3.2 had 180 Hspwr. Do you have a link to this.
Are we all talking to the flywheel?

Heh, he was joking...
From all the dyno sheets Ive seen the 3.2's always make more TQ than HP with the 3.0's being the opposite. It's even rated at more by BMW, 225 and 236, if memory serves.Originally posted by EB ///M3

And I must say this is a bit frightening. Maybe we should have a "Get to know your M3" class.

I agree. It's like people look at the ratings put out by BMW and it just doesnt sink in. Maybe if our cars had around 88 hp it would be easier...only two digits to remember and it doesnt matter if you mix them up.
I don't care how much power my car has, it has a Roundel and therefore is better then any car ever made.
well put, john. the roundel makes a car above average, but the ///M badge makes the car unbelieveable.
LOL, What I mean is BMW supposedly says they are the same but there is some gains in both hp and torque they don't tell you about between the 3.0 and the 3.2
frank999....
Check my sig for the number on my '99. These #'s are at the wheel from a dyno run this past June. The only mod's at the time of this dyno run were a stock replacement K&N air filter. My baby had about 35k miles on her clock at that time

Sorry. You really should've given up while you were only slightly behind...Originally posted by EB ///M3

BMW reports the following figures for the US-spec E36 M3s:
1995: HP = 240 bhp, TQ = 225 ft-lb
1996 - 1999: HP = 240 bhp, TQ = 236 ft-lb
So, while they do claim the hp figures are identical from 3.0L to 3.2L, they make no such claim with regard to the torque figures for the two iterations of the S5x engine.
